What is Letterboxing?  Letterboxing is a rapidly-growing hobby that combines hiking in the beautiful outdoors with the excitement of a treasure hunt, and an opportunity for artistic expression as well. There are many variations. Participants hide boxes in locations which are of interest for either their scenic beauty, their historical significance, or just a really fun place to visit. Everyone is welcome to hunt for the box, and everyone is welcome to hide more boxes themselves.

What's in a Letterbox?  Each letterbox contains a stamp (usually hand-carved from an eraser), a logbook, usually a pen or pencil, and often an ink pad (some letterboxers prefer not to include an ink pad, expecting that the seeker will bring his own). As a letterbox seeker, you carry with you your own personal stamp, your personal logbook, pen or pencil, and ink pad. When you find a letterbox, you "stamp in" to the box's logbook with your personal stamp, and also stamp your own logbook with the box's stamp.

How Do I Find a Letterbox?  First, obtain a set of clues. Most (but not all) clues are published on the Internet. Refer to the sites listed at the top of this page. Many letterboxers also maintain their own personal web sites, on which they publish clues to boxes they have hidden. Some clues are available at the Eastern Mountain Sports store in Waterford, CT. Some clues for "mystery boxes" will only be found within other letterboxes.

How Do I Hide a Letterbox?  To hide (plant, or place) a letterbox, you will need a waterproof container (such as a Rubbermaid container). At minimum, the letterbox must contain a stamp and a logbook. Choose a location which is accessible to the public. If you intend to plant a letterbox on private property, or indoors, be sure to get permission from the property owner BEFORE you place the box. Do not place letterboxes in such a way as to cause or encourage letterbox seekers to trample through environmentally sensitive areas. Please, always obey any laws or locally posted signs. Thank you, and Have Fun!
