Purple Serpentine Dragon
Location: Hurd State Park, East Hampton, CT.
Terrain: Moderate.
Clues: Easy.
Time: Same as for Blue Griffin.
DIRECTIONS: For directions to Hurd State Park, see the clues for the
Blue Griffin letterbox.
CLUES: After finding the Blue
Griffin letterbox, continue to the picnic areas. Proceed
south through the picnic area, passing by one uphill trail on your
left, then take the second uphill trail on your left, passing by the stone
footbridge on your right. (This is the River Trail that you started down,
before you branched off it to follow the red trail.) Go up
this trail for a few steps until you can easily walk off-trail to
your right onto a knoll beside the trail. Sit on a large rock
flecked with quartz and mica, which is on the sloping south side
of the hill, near the brook. (There are actually two such rocks,
but it is not the one closest to the brook, it is the one closer to the river.)
Sit facing the river, with the
brook on your left, and you will see a tree in front of you that
is hollow at the base. Here within lives the Purple Serpentine
Dragon.
The RETURN: Same as for Blue Griffin. (If you like, continue on to
the White Elephant letterbox.)
